Frequently asked questions

Are you looking for more detailed information about safety shoes but can’t find it right away? Make use of the FAQ below to find the right answers. Please contact our customer service if you still have any questions regarding our safety footwear.

What is ESD?
ESD stands for ‘ElectroStatic Discharge’, and ESD-protected shoes prevent or at least limit electrostatic discharge and contribute to diverting any charge that may be generated in a controlled manner. Under certain conditions, anti-static shoes have an electrical resistance of 0.1-35M Ohm. Under the same conditions, ESD shoes have a much lower resistance. Friction can generate static electricity, and this can lead to uncomfortable or even dangerous static discharge. Electronic components are becoming increasingly more sensitive to static discharge. ESD shoes and socks from Bata can contribute to making this type of situation more manageable.

Do I need a high or low model safety shoes?
A high safety shoe offers extra protection for your ankles and is generally warmer for your feet. A boot is even higher. Low model safety shoes can offer more freedom of motion. Loafers are easy to slip in and out. Sandals are ventilated shoes, which are ideal for certain job situations.

What are the differences between toecaps?
A steel toecap protects your toes from heavy falling or rolling objects. Having a steel toecap protects the otherwise vulnerable toes. In a lot of work situations wearing safety footwear reduces a lot of accidents and the severity of accidents. There are also safety shoes with a composite toecap. These safety shoes are usually completely metal free and will, for instance, not trigger metal detection gates. Both the steel and composite toecap are resistant to impacts up to 200 Joules.

Why do I need an anti-perforation mid-sole (steel or synthetics mid-sole)?
A steel mid-sole in the shoe provides protection from perforation or the penetration of sharp or hot objects through the outsole. Bata also has shoes with a synthetic (lenzi) anti-perforation mid-sole. This is used as an alternative to steel, yet is lighter, more flexible and offers better insulation. Both materials satisfy the norm, but steel generally offers the best protection.

What kind of standards are required for my safety shoes?
Bata Industrials produces specific shoes that satisfy the norm that is relevant for you: EN ISO 20345 for safety shoes, EN ISO 20347 for occupational shoes, ESD, BS7971. The difference is that EN ISO 20345 shoes have a protective toecap, EN ISO 20347 shoes do not. Both types of shoes also satisfy all of the requirements for the relevant norm. The aforementioned norms are divided into various classifications.

- SB: Safety shoes for occupational use with safety toecaps, can withstand an impact up to 200 Joules and compression of 15 kN. SB shoes also satisfy a whole list of criteria, including many different quality standards for shaft and sole, comfort requirements, minimum slip resistance and oil resistance.
- S1: See SB plus anti-static properties, and energy-absorbing and closed heel.
- S1 P: See S1 plus perforation-resistant mid-sole.
- S2: See S1 plus upper with a certain maximum water permeability and water absorption.
- S3: See S2 plus perforation-resistant mid-sole and outsole with a certain quantity of tread.
